Dried flowers are often placed like fresh ones — on the dining table, in the brightest spot — when their real gift is the opposite. They come into their own exactly where a living plant or a cut stem would struggle. Here is where we would put them, room by room.

The hallway

The hall is the first thing anyone sees and, usually, the darkest room in the house — no light for anything living, and no time to fuss over it. That makes it perfect for a tall, sculptural gesture: a generous bundle of poppies or a spray of palm, standing at eye level, setting the tone for the whole home before a coat is even off.

The living room

Here, keep it low and singular. Trim an arrangement short for the coffee table or a stack of books, so it becomes a still life you look down into rather than a screen between people. One vessel, one accent of colour, plenty of clear surface around it — the room stays calm and the botanical does the talking.

The bathroom

The room most people forget is the one where dried botanicals earn their keep. A bathroom has no light for a living plant and too much damp for cut flowers, yet a few dried stems bring warmth to all that hard tile and stone. Keep them out of the direct spray of the shower, crack a window now and then, and they will hold for years.

The bedroom

A bedroom wants calm, and dried flowers are quiet by nature — no pollen, no scent to disturb sleep, no water on the nightstand. Choose soft, tonal stems that sit within the palette of the room rather than shouting over it. Something you see last at night and first in the morning, asking nothing of you in between.

The dark corner, and the desk

Finally, the places nothing living survives: a windowless corner, a shelf on the turn of the stairs, a busy desk in a room with one small window. These are where dried botanicals are not a substitute for a plant but simply the only beautiful option — a little life exactly where none could otherwise grow.

Put them where fresh flowers fail, and they look less like a compromise and more like the point.
